Yet, over time, an asset’s integrity decreases, due to the degradation of its components by damage mechanisms, usually involving thinning or cracking modes.
In general, facilities plan an asset’s lifespan based on predicted corrosion rates; however, upsets and/or inferior product quality, as well as the presence of other non-thinning damage mechanisms, can alter these initial lifespan plans. Undetected degradation over time can cause an asset to fail before its projected lifespan, leading to a costly repair or replacement.
